Camberley
boys were founded on 15th June 1991 at an Inaugural Meeting held in
the Royal Standard public house in Frimley Road,
Camberley. The attendees were Andy Hammond, Gary Pym and Steve
Simpson. There were two teams in the
original formation, which were quickly doubled with another
one joining and one formed from the under 8 age group. The first season saw 4 teams wearing the Camberley
colours. The choice of colours were due to a lack of funds and the
need for a colour scheme which did not clash with opponents. The choice
was the Barcelona stripes of the time. The Club grew quickly over the years
with the 1999/2000 season having 27 teams wearing the
Club colours. The original teams were playing out of Frimley Green Recreation
Ground and the under 8`s at Grove School. As the Club grew we came under considerable pressure to find more
venues for our teams. Thanks to the efforts of Jeff Shaw we
were able to form a harmonious alliance with Farnborough
Sixth Form College which is current to date. Over the years the Club has been
fortunate
in attracting the right sort of people to run such an organisation.
I could wax lyrical about the
Managers, Committee Members, Office Bearers, Parents and helpers
who have come and stayed (or gone) through the years. Camberley
Boys has been exceptionally lucky to have had Alan Watson and Chris
& Jan Nunn as staunch and committed supporters through
the last nine years. This does not detract from all the others
who have had a considerable input, but I feel a special
mention regarding these three is merited. Over the last five
years there has been a shift of emphasis from 11 a side to 7 a side which
has seen the growth of teams at the younger age groups. The Club has
junior teams playing in the West Surrey and North East Hants
Leagues. The senior teams from under 11 upwards are
playing in the West Surrey, North East Hants and the East Berks Intermediate
League.
The Club ethos is
to provide a good standard of training, camaraderie and football for
boys and where allowed girls. To list all the achievements of
all the teams here would be lengthy but special
mention is given to the many Camberley teams who have achieved County recognition by winning or
being finalists at County level. The Club is still
improving and we hope we will maintain our considerable reputation
for fielding good, strong, football playing teams at all ages.
