Camberley Boys Maroons 2 Crookham Rovers Raiders 3
Home game today at Frimley Park Lodge with the 6th Form pitches unavailable. Change round positionally today with the line up: Matthew S in goal, Jack and William fullbacks with Josh and Christy in the middle. Midfield, Kieron and Andrew wide with Steven and Daniel in the middle. Matty and Matthew R up front and Matthew G and Peter first change.
With so many positional changes the Maroons took a little time to settle, however their commitment form the kick off against a physical Crookham Raiders (CR) team was 100%. The opening minutes were well-contested with CR looking to hit the ball long to their centre forward, the Maroons adopting a more patient passing game. The Maroons were first to threaten, a great move down the right saw Jack, Andrew and Daniel exchanging passes, a cross came in from the right but nobody in the box to take advantage.
Moments later good work on the opposite flank Steven and Daniel combining and working the ball to Kieron, he in turn played the ball up to Matty and his good pass put Matthew R clear on the left but unable to test the keeper. 7 minutes in and a CR throw midway inside the Maroons left flank, the ball came back to the throw-taker who was unmarked and had time to send a high cross into the Maroons penalty area, the ball was allowed to bounce near the penalty area, a CR player headed the ball unchallenged towards goal and the CR centre forward took advantage being first to react and prodding the ball into the corner of the net to give CR a 1-0 lead.
Great response though by the Maroons as they put another fine passing move together ending in CR conceding a corner. A great delivery from Kieron from the corner, Steven got his head to the ball but could only glance the ball across the goal but great instinctive reactions from Matthew R who smashed the loose ball high into the net to tie the game up at 1-1.
No further goalscoring opportunities for either team during the next 10 minutes, the two midfields traded tackles in a real battle with Kieron, Steven and Daniel standing firm in a very physical encounter, again the long ball was CR most dangerous play, however William, Josh, Christy and Jack rose to the challenge making some fine tackles and clearances and refusing to yield, defending resolutely on the edge of the penalty area.
21 minutes saw a great sliding tackle by Jack on the edge of the area to win the ball and find Daniel, Daniel attacked the space with the ball before a terrific ball to split the CR defence, Matthew R ran onto the ball and his shot was on target but well claimed by the keeper.
Moment’s Daniel set of on a fine run beating several players before finding Kieron who’s shot brought a good save from the keeper. The Maroons finished the half the stronger having taken hold of the midfield and a further long range attempt on goal from William brought a save from the CR keeper.
Half time 1-1.
Changes at HT saw Peter on up front for Matty and Matthew G in midfield for Andrew. The Maroons started the second half as they finished the first, Steven and Daniel combined working the ball to Peter who, with his first touch of the ball split the CR defence wide open with a superb ball through to Matthew R, Matthew R advanced to the edge of the area but probably struck his shot a little too early and the CR goalkeeper made a comfortable save to his right.
Injury to Matthew G saw Andrew return to the game, the Maroons continued to press taking a vice like grip on the game and playing some fantastic passing football. With Steven holding in midfield Daniel was less restricted with the ability to go right, centre or left when running with the ball, Kieron and William began link well down the left hand flank, one fantastic pass from William sending Matthew R clear down the left wing , he outpaced the defenders got to the outside edge of the 6 yard box but with Peter unmarked at the far post opted for the near post shooting wide.
Another fine combination of passing followed with Kieron then showing great skill and determination to get down the line before pulling the ball back to the edge of the area , Peter set himself with a good first touch and his powerful shot was well saved by the keeper diving full length to his left to push the ball away for a corner.
No respite for Crookham as back came Camberley again moving the ball confidently with quick accurate passing, a great ball into the 6 yard box found Matthew with the keeper to beat but agonisingly the ball rolled the wrong side of the post.
Midway through the second half Crookham enjoyed their first real success of the half as they broke down our left flank, William and Daniel did well to track back with William making a good tackle outside the area. The referees whistle sounded and brought the play back awarding a free-kick to CR mid way inside the Maroons half. A very harsh decision for an incident of minimal contact particularly bearing in mind the amount of pushing off the ball that had gone unpunished previously and which was prevalent throughout the game. The resulting free-kick was hoisted high into our penalty area, no Maroons challenge as we let the ball bounce on the penalty spot allowing the CR forward to head the ball into the net to give CR a 2-1 lead totally against the run of play.
A real body blow for the boys after having dominated for so long with no reward but to their immense credit they refused to let their heads drop, rolled up their sleeves and came right back at CR. Soon after the restart Daniel took possession around the half way line and a fantastic dribble took him into the CR penalty area and a fantastic strike saw the ball into the far corner of the net to tie the game up at 2-2.
Back came CR another long ball caused problems in the defence and a fine tackle from Christy averted the danger. Matthew S then made a great save to deny CR in a one on one to keep the scores at 2-2.
The last 7 minutes were a real battle with no quarter given by either team, 4 minutes to go and following a throw in, another seemingly routine high ball again was allowed to bounce just outside the 6 yard box the same CR forward left unchallenged as he headed ball into the net to give CR a rather flattering lead again.
Unfortunately not enough time for the Maroons to respond, however they never gave up and kept going until the final whistle sounded giving the opposition a win.
Defeat today was really hard on the boys as they fully deserved to get something from the game today having played so well. As the Crookham manager said at the end of the game “you passed us off the park at times today”. Well done to the boys who played in somewhat unfamiliar positions today, they each acquitted themselves very well.
The whole team should be really proud of how they played today, probably their most consistant performance of the season against very strong opposition. We still have a lot to learn about the 11-a-side game defensively, something that we will work in training to help them with, however the commitment and effort of the boys cannot be faulted. Well done to all.

Manor Colts Greens 6 Camberley Boys Maroons 1
Maroons made the long trip to Alton on a wet Saturday morning to face a strong Manor Colts Green side (MC), line up today Matthew S in goal, Christy, Josh, William & Matthew G in defence, Kieron, Jack, Steven and Daniel in midfield, Andrew & Matthew R up front with Matty as first change.
The Maroons were the first to settle, for the first few minutes they dominated with MC not in the game at all. The Maroons looked sharper than their opponents and began with one outstanding move, putting together more than 12 passes without interception, working the ball into a good shooting position with Matthew R just unable to hit the target.
MC then woke up and began competing, the game became more even over the next few minutes with neither team really dominating.
The game really changed after 10 minutes, MC first real attack saw their forward receive the ball wide left of our penalty area, poor defending as we initially failed to close him down quickly enough and then simply ran alongside the forward rather than making a tackle when the opportunity was there. The forward took advantage and cut into the penalty area before firing the ball high into the net to give MC a lead totally against the run of play.
MC nearly added a second moments later, again poor defending with a 15 yard gap between our last two defenders playing their forward on side a second goal only averted by a terrific save from Matthew S. Moments later the Maroons were forced into reshuffle with Matthew G unable to continue after hurting his ankle. Steven dropped back into defence to partner Josh, William moved across to left back, Andrew joined Jack in the centre of midfield and Matty partnered Matthew R up front.
The early optimism of the first couple of minutes quickly faded as MC ominously took a grip on the game. Matthew S made two further fine and very brave saves in the next 5 minutes as MC took total control of the game. For the remainder of the first half the Maroons were unable to get out of their own half as they fought a frantic rearguard action. Another great save from Matthew and a great sliding tackle from Steven kept the score at 1-0 but with the Maroons on the ropes at this point.
MC began to cut through the centre of our midfield at will, leaving us chasing shadows at times as we failed to cope with the passing and movement of their two centre midfielders. One such break saw MC go 2-0 ahead when a good through ball caught our defence square leaving the forward to run into the area and finish clinically. Our defence began to look disorganised with nobody taking responsibility for marking players and non-existent communication. The two full-backs pushed too far forward at the same time leaving the two centre backs 2 on 2 with no cover. The biggest defensive failing though was our inability to push up as a unit continuously playing two very quick MC forwards on side. As a result we conceded a third goal as again MC broke through the centre of midfield before sliding through a pass to a forward, who again, we had played onside. Another clinical finish extended MC lead to 3-0.
I have never seen a Maroon’s team dominated in such a one-sided game before, but credit to MC who were relentless in their work rate and, but for Matthew S in goal, they could have easily doubled their lead during the half. A 4th goal did arrive though and again we were the architects of our own downfall. A MC corner caused problems in the area, however a good clearance cleared the danger and sent the ball into the MC half, at this point our defence should have pushed up towards the half way line and thus catching the MC forward line off side, unfortunately we had 5 players remaining in and around our own 6 yard box, the ball came straight back and was picked up by a MC player on the edge of the penalty area who finished well to give MC a 4-0 half time lead.
The opening moments of the second half saw a response as we contested the centre of midfield with a couple of good tackles from Jack, however MC quickly moved back into top gear causing us to loose our shape again as once again and reverted to chasing the ball rather than holding our positions.
The defence looked a little more solid second half, allowing Kieron and Daniel the opportunity to try to attack down the flanks. MC though still looked the more capable team and continued to dominate, they were first to the loose ball and were willing to “put a foot in” or get a head to the ball when we were not.
A break down our left flank midway through the half ended with a fine shot into the roof of the net to take the score to 5-0. Two more good saves from Matthew followed. Kieron was then the victim of a poor linesman’s flag as he headed the ball over his marking defender and ran onto the ball only to be flagged offside.
Moments later William played a great ball through to Kieron, MC player tried to stop the pass going over his head with his hand but only succeeded in diverting the ball into Kieron’s path putting him through with a clear run on goal, unbelievably after a short pause, the ref blew the whistle and brought the play back to the half way line for a free kick for the hand ball; also, not a word to the player who had denied a goal scoring opportunity by hand ball. With no subs, it looked as if we were about to go down to 9 players following an injury to Steven and Kieron suffering the prolonged effects of a weekday illness, however, another re-shuffle with Kieron and Steven having to move up front in a makeshift forward line.
Back in the Maroon’s half, MC worked the ball to the edge of the penalty area, poor defending again as a simple turn took two Maroon players out of the game leaving the MC player with time to fire the ball low into the corner of the net for 6-0.
To their credit, the Maroons responded in the final five minutes, Matty showing some good determination, Matthew R shooting narrowly wide before Daniel latched onto a loose ball in the penalty area to fire home a consolation goal for Camberley.
Final score 6-1.
Verdict: Before the game, we stressed the need to keep our shape and contain the two MC boys in central midfield. Unfortunately we were unable to cope with the running and movement of these two boys particularly in the first half, as they totally controlled the game and looked more committed and tactically aware than us.
Defensively we were very poor, the 11-a-side game is not just about tackling but also the ability to read the game and what is going on around you, particularly the understanding of when to push up from defence and the offside rule, in general. At the moment we are found wanting as the awareness part of the game is not there.
Offensively we made little impression, mainly because our two wide midfield players were restricted to defensive duties during much of the game. Up front, we looked a little lightweight compared with previous weeks. A frustrating day, the boys showed in the first 5 minutes what they are capable of but after that the game became totally one sided with Manor thoroughly deserving their victory.
MOM: Matthew Shlackman (kept the score from reaching double figures).

Finchampstead 0 Camberley Boys Maroons 6
Early start this morning as the Maroons made the short trip to Finchampstead Athletic (FA), line up today Matthew S in goal, Christy, Josh, William & Matthew G in defence, Kieron, Jack, Andrew and Daniel in midfield, Matty & Matthew R up front with Steven recovering from illness as sub.
Plenty of hard work required first half defending the slope first half and the Maroons began in tenacious mood competing well all over the pitch as both teams attempted to take control of the game. Even though they were playing uphill the Maroons quickly became the dominant team winning some good tackles in the middle of midfield and looking to try and move the ball forward through quick passing combinations whenever they could.
After 3 minutes Andrew found Daniel wide right, Daniel played an intelligent pass back to the supporting Christy, who returned the ball to Daniel, he advanced with the ball beating a couple of players before playing a fine pass down the right flank to Matthew R, Matthew showed good pace and control as he got to the goal line before delivering an inviting cross but unfortunately no Maroons in the 6 yard box to take advantage. Two more similar attacks down the right flank failed to yield a goal scoring opportunity but were both well constructed passing moves.
The team kept a very good shape throughout the half and crucially kept hold of the ball when we had possession and tried to use it intelligently rather than giving it away wastefully as in some of our previous games. The pattern of play continued with Camberley the dominant team, admirably the Maroons continued to try and progress by passing the ball, sometimes the final pass went astray, however to their credit the boys remained patient and continued trying to work the ball.
10 minutes in and another fine move as Daniel and Matthew R combined , Daniel then laid the ball back to Kieron who’s shot was on target but well saved by the keeper. He then managed to clear the ball but only as far as Christy who advanced with the ball at his feet before swinging in a fine cross which had “head me” written all over it, unfortunately no Maroons able to capitalise.
The Maroons switched their attack to the left flank, Andrew and Kieron exchanged passes, Kieron laying the ball inside to Daniel who instantly beat his marker and then firing in a shot which beat the keeper but agonisingly clipped the top of the bar. FA were unable to make any impression on the Maroons back line, any advances they tried were stopped with some fine tackling from Josh, William, Christy and Matthew G, the only time the Maroons looked in any trouble was against the long high ball when on a couple of occasions we failed to attack the ball, opting to let the ball bounce. More alert forwards would have possibly capitalised on our hesitancy, however we escaped unpunished with Matthew S showing good awareness on one such occasion to come out fast and collect the ball. This period of uncertainty continued for a short period.
15 minutes gone and great awareness from Christy who’s quick throw released Daniel down the right flank, Daniel advanced into the penalty area before cutting the ball back along the 6 yard box where Matty had made a good run, he looked sure to open the scoring but was unfortunate as the ball got stuck beneath his foot and the contact with the ball lacked direction with FA relieved to have cleared the danger.
17 minutes back came FA with their forward finally breaking through our defence to the edge of the area where a great saving tackle from Jack blocked his shot on goal.
FA had their best opportunity on 20 minutes, some hesitant defending giving them a shooting opportunity which was lifted over the crossbar.
The Maroons responded well another fine combination of passing between Daniel and Christy with Christy’s pass setting Matthew R racing clear on the right flank, Matthew advanced into the penalty area he fired in a shot which the keeper saved on his near post, Matthew was a little too wide to beat the keeper and just needed to look up with Matty, Andrew and Kieron all unmarked on the edge of the 6 yard box.
Frustration as half time approaching and the Maroons failed to have capitalised on several great chances to take the lead, you got the feeling that maybe it was going to be one of those games.
27 minutes gone and Daniel won a good tackle, he skipped inside one player then outside another before putting a fantastic ball through for Matthew R, Matthew outpaced the defender and advanced halfway into the FA half, the keeper advanced and Matthew showed great technique as he chipped the ball over the keeper and into the net for an exquisite finish to give the boys a deserved 1-0 lead.
28 minutes and the Maroons switched the attack to the left flank, the ball was worked inside to Kieron who took the ball on a couple of paces before striking a powerful shot on goal which literally parted a defenders hair on its way into the net to give the Maroons a crucial second goal and a 2-0 half time lead.
Half time saw the introduction of Steven to the game with Matty taking a break.
The Maroons took up where they left off and after 33 minutes a FA clearance dropped to the edge of the area where Jack sent a rasping drive narrowly over the bar.
Good work from Andrew and Kieron after 34 minutes saw the ball crossed to right edge of the penalty area where Steven instant turn and shot beat the keeper but rolled agonisingly past the far post.
More Maroons pressure followed Jack seizing on another FA clearance, his long range shot fumbled by the keeper who recovered and smothered the ball before it could cross the line and with Matthew R following in for any loose bal.
In the first half much of the Maroons attacking play came down the right flank, the second half saw a switch with much of the ball down the left flank. 37 minutes gone and William cleared the ball up to Kieron, Kieron beat a couple of players before playing a great ball down the line for Andrew, a great piece of dribbling skill from Andrew who beat two players to get to the goal line, he then beat another and drew the keeper before laying a fantastic pass across the 6 yard box which somehow evaded both Matthew R and then the late arriving Steven who could only push the ball the wrong side of the post.
40 minutes in saw a good ball from Josh up to Steven, Steven’s first time pass with the outside of his foot releasing Keiron down the left, Kieron turned inside his man then fired in a shot which the keeper did well to save.
42 minutes and a long ball forward was defended confidently by Matthew G who took control and found Kieron out wide with a fine pass, Kieron advanced beating two players before cutting inside and firing in another great shot which was only a fraction too high.
Super passing again down the left between Andrew and Kieron ending with a corner. Kierons well flighted kick finding Daniel in the penalty are, FA did well to black his first effort but Daniels reactions were excellent as he latched onto the loose ball and made no mistake with the follow up drilling the ball high into the net to extend the lead to 3-0.
45 minutes good exchange of passes between Daniel and Christy, the latter’s measured ball down the line looked inviting but the FA fullback looked in control, great determination by Matthew R who accelerated and got to the ball first, he continued to the goal line and delivered another fine cross into the 6 yard area but again no Maroon presence to take advantage. Another change at this point with Matthew R taking a well earned break and Matty returning up front.
FA to their credit tried to respond and it needed a combination of tackling from Matthew G, Josh and William to clear the ball after a couple of FA attacks. The game became a little more physical at this point as Daniel found himself brought to ground with a series of heavy challenges. The tempo of tackling began to increase but the Maroons were unyielding and contested every 50/50 ball with Jack and Josh both making good challenges. 5 minutes left and the impressive Andrew getting a rest with Matthew R returning.
54 minutes saw another fine move down the left, FA looked to have survived as they cleared the danger, the ball ran loose 10 yards outside the penalty area, Christy ran onto the ball and his powerful shot arrowed into the top corner of the net from fully 25 yards out to put himself into the frame for goal of the season and to extend the lead to 4-0.
This stunning strike from Christy was quickly followed by two goals constructed of passing of the highest quality. 27 minutes Steven’s clever 10yd pass switching the play to Kieron, Kieron swapped passes with Jack, beat a player and then played a super pass down the line for the overlapping William, William cut in from the left flank before hitting a powerful dipping shot high into the net for 5-0. Matthew G nearly added to the total when his long range strike was fumbled by the keeper who then recovered to stop the ball crossing the line.
FA never gave up in their pursuit of a consolation goal and it took a brilliant sliding tackle from Josh and a brave save from Matthew S in the final minutes to deny the opposition.
The Maroons finished the game with a flourish and a goal of outstanding technical quality. The move began on the edge of the Maroons own penalty area, Matthew G, Steven, Jack and Kieron exchanging passes, Kieron then working the ball down the left flank before swapping passes with Matty, Kieron then took the ball to the edge of the area before unselfishly squaring the ball across the 6 yard box where Steven applied the finish to what was truly a great team goal. Final score 6-0.
Verdict: Nothing but praise for the way the boys played today, at times their passing was simply outstanding. Very difficult to play at that level week in week out however when the boys do reach those levels it makes you feel very proud of their abilities at this age. Special mention for Daniel who today showed great awareness and was 100% correct in his choice of options when on the ball, passing or dribbling as the situation required. Well done to the FA boys who never gave up.
MOM: Kieron Woodward

03/10/09 NEHYL Cup
Camberley Boys Maroons 4 Fleet Spurs Utd 1
As cup holders the Maroons began the defence of their trophy with a 2nd round tie against Fleet Spurs United (FSU) at a vey windy 6th Form. The previous evening we looked to have been going out the cup without having played a game due to several boys having gone down with illness, my thanks to Peter who signed on in the morning ensuring we had 11 to start with.
The game began somewhat frantic and untidy with neither team able to retain possession of the ball for any length of time with the ball being given away too cheaply by both sides. A scrappy opening 5 minutes saw play mainly confined to the midfield , neither team managing to prise an opening. Gradually the Maroons began to settle and became the more influential of the teams. Andrew and Jack matched the commitment of the FSU boys in central midfield, Kieron and Daniel began to find success on the flanks ably supported by full backs William and Christy. Matty and Peter worked relentlessly up front making some intelligent runs but not receiving the ball quite quickly enough. Matthew in goal was largely a spectator for much of the half but showed good awareness in coming to collect the ball when needed. Josh and Steven looked strong as a central defensive pairing and dealt confidently with the long balls forward that FSU tended to reply upon.
Kieron and his opposite winger enjoyed a healthy rivalry throughout the game, matching each other tackle for tackle, 11 minutes in and Kieron showed great determination to dispossess his rival, he played a neat one two and then surged down the left flank cutting inside before striking a venomous shot on target which beat the keeper to give the Maroons a 1-0 lead. The Maroons then took control of the game and although not at the top of their passing game there were some combinations of passing developing that opened up FSU down both flanks. Daniel and Christy combined well down the right before finding Peter, Peter beating his man out wide before delivering an inviting cross to the edge of the 6 yard box where Matty’s header brought a fine save from the keeper.
Matty held the ball up well and linked well with Peter and the supporting midfield. Jack and Andrew worked hard in the centre of midfield. Daniel then combined with Peter before sending a shot just wide of the keepers far post. William then made a great recovering tackle outside his own area before surging over the half way line and then down the line in a strong run ending with a shot wide of the post.
Andrew suffered an injury midway through the half and was replaced by Matthew G, who moved to Left back, William reverting to Central defence and Steven pushing into midfield. The Maroons continued to dominate the majority of the first half and although they never achieved the fluency of passing that they are capable of they did always try to build through passing rather than playing the long ball. FSU then caused the Maroons defence a little trouble with the long ball as once or twice hesitancy led to openings that were stopped by some fine covering by William. A poor clearance presented FSU with their only real chance of the half but the shot from outside the area was far too high. Daniel was then unfortunate to have been adjudged offside as he ran onto a super through ball from Steven. The Maroons kept pressing and 4 minutes before half time scored an all-important second goal. Good work by Daniel , Peter and Andrew on the right saw the ball crossed in and Matty displayed great technique as he turned and cracked the ball into the net to give the Maroons a 2-0 lead.
Second half began with Andrew back on for Matthew G who was still feeling the effects of a recent illness, Steven back to the centre of defence and William to left back. The pattern of play followed that of the first half with Camberley comfortable without ever really being in top or 2nd gear but still having too much strength for their opponents. The Maroons began to enjoy continual success down the left flank where William combined well with Kieron. Twice in the next 10 minutes William won the ball strongly and surged down the left flank, firstly sending in a dangerous cross and secondly testing the keeper with a powerful shot.
On the other flank Daniel and Peter combined well setting up a chance for Matty which was wide of the post. The third goal was not long coming, a good quick throw from Kieron found Peter, he headed the ball onto Andrew who in turn found Matty wide of the 6 yard box, to his credit Matty still had quite a lot to do and intelligently moved the ball to his left thus opening up the angle between the keeper and post before slotting the ball home into that gap in a finish that showed great composure to put the Maroons 3-0 ahead.
FSU then enjoyed their best spell of the game but found Josh and Steven in uncompromising mood in the centre of defence as they cleared everything that FSU could throw at them. With Christy and William keeping the defensive firmly shut there seemed no way through for Fleet. The condituions were to give a helping hand though, when a long range shot seemed to have beaten both Matthew and the cross bar but suddenly died in the wind and fell beneath the bar to bring the score back to
3-1.
The Maroons responded with Jack and Andrew having to increase their workrate against two good Fleet midfielders and again Camberley took control of the game.
Another fine move down the left and the ball whipped into the edge of the 6 yard box, where Peter bravely got to the ball fractionally in front of the keeper and showing great technique managed to flick the ball around the keeper with the outside of his foot before regaining his balance and spinning round the opposite side of the keeper and firing the ball over the line to give the Maroons a 4-1 lead.
The Maroons were comfortable for the remainder of the half but frustratingly tended to try to over-complicate things when simple solutions were more viable.
Final score 4-1.
MOM Matty
Verdict: A workman like performance from the Maroons who never achieved the free-flowing football of the first fixture between these sides but always had too much for the opposition.

26/09/09 NEHYL Premier Division
Camberley Boys Maroons 0 Petersfield Town Leopards 3
The Maroons began the game very strongly imposing themselves on the game from the opening whistle and encouragingly dominating the early stages. After 2 minutes the Maroons won a good tackle and worked the ball left to Keiron who made a strong run down the left flank, he crossed into the 6 yard box but the keeper claimed comfortably. 3 minutes on the clock and Steven won the ball outside the Petersfield Town (PT) penalty area, his shot going just the wrong side of the far post. A minute later Steven split the PT defence with an intelligent through-ball which had just a fraction too much pace and the keeper was alert to gather the ball just before Matthew R could get to it.
The Maroons’ early pressure continued with Daniel testing the keeper with a shot from outside the box after 4 minutes.
PT responded with their first attack after 5 minutes when a long-ball caused problems in the Maroons penalty area. The defence had opportunities to clear the ball but looked very uncertain, as the ball was scrambled clear following a series of miss kicks.
8 minutes in and Steven blocked a clearance on the edge of the area, he chased the rebound into the penalty area but again the keeper showed good awareness to come out and smothered the ball.
Bad marking nearly cost the Maroons on 11 minutes when the PT boy taking a throw in was not marked, the ball was played back to him, he then ran unchallenged into the penalty area before firing in a good shot on goal which Matthew did well to save on his near post.
Again, worrying signs in the Maroons defence on 12 minutes as another long ball caused panic catching the defence square, the PT forward took advantage of the defensive uncertainty and was first to the ball , he advanced into the Maroons penalty area, a great saving tackle from William won the ball and prevented a probable PT goal. William not only won the ball but also brought the ball out of defence before playing a superb pass out to Daniel on the right. Daniel collected the ball and progressed down the right flank beating a couple of players before crossing to Matthew R who was denied by a good PT saving tackle for a corner.
Maroons had a great chance to take the lead on 13 minutes when Steven again split the PT defence with a through-ball, Matty collected on the edge of the area advanced into the area where he found himself 1 on 1 with the keeper, who stood firm and saved Matty’s shot to keep the score at 0-0.
14 minutes saw the Maroons awarded a free kick on the left of the half way line, Williams excellent free kick caused uncertainty in the PT defence, however unfortunately the Maroons were a little slow to react and PT cleared the ball to safety. PT responded again on 15 minutes with their right winger cutting inside from the flank before unleashing a good shot on goal which was blocked by Steven.
17 minutes gone PT hit a long ball over the top of our defence and heading towards the goal line for a goal kick, William correctly chased back towards the ball but, with his back to the field of play, was unaware that he had time to let the ball run out of play. At this point somebody should have told William to let the ball run out of play but there was no call resulting in us keeping the ball on and then clearing for a throw to PT. PT won a corner from the resulting throw, The Maroons again struggled to clear the ball giving a PT player too much time and space as he turned and fired the ball into the corner of the net. Needless goal conceded by the Maroons as a simple piece of communication would have given the boys a goal kick rather than conceding a throw on and corner initially. Andrew replaced an injured Steven after 20 minutes and linked up well with the forward line, however we were unable to breach the PT defence. The last 5 minutes of the half saw PT having more of an influence on the game as the Maroons were forced to defend against a passage of play in which PT were more dominant. Good tackles from Josh and Christy ensured that PT were unable to add to their lead. HT – 1-0.
Second half saw Matthew R take a rest and Steven returning. Like the fist half ,the Maroons began the second half the stronger side with the midfield dominating again. Jack and Steven winning good tackles in the centre and Keiron and Daniel providing good width. 32 minutes saw Keiron making a fine run down the left flank before striking a shot on target which the keeper saved well. PT hit back forcing Matthew S into a good save at the other end. 34 minutes saw the Maroons win a free kick outside the area wide right, Steven’s free-kick was whipped in dangerously to the 6 yard box, PT failed to clear but with the Maroons unable to capitalise the chance went begging.
38 minutes saw Christy win a good tackle and showed intelligent distribution passing inside to Daniel, a great overlapping run from Christy who took the return ball and crossed but again the keeper gathered comfortably. 40 minutes saw Andrew in possession and a superb first-time through pass put Keiron clear, Keiron advanced with the ball and his shot was on target but again the keeper made a good save. Another change on 42 mins saw Matty taking a rest and Matthew R back on. When the Maroons moved the ball quickly they continued to cause PT problems, Andrew and Matthew R showing some nice touches in linking up play.
Frustratingly, we fell into our bad habits of failing to choose the right option of when to pass and when to run with the ball, throughout the remainder of the half we failed to play the early pass when the opportunity was there, as a result we frequently got caught in possession when in good offensive positions handing PT the ball. Similarly when in good positions to cross the ball , we tried to beat an extra man and the opportunity to cross the ball had gone.
46 minutes and PT went 2-0 up following another defensive mix-up, the ball was played into the area, again the Maroons had chances to clear the ball however a lack of composure saw the ball ricochet off a Maroons player, PT struck the ball goal wards Josh gave chase and got to the ball but could only help the ball into the net for an unfortunate own goal. PT then enjoyed their best spell of the game as the Maroons began to loose both their shape and a little belief. Half – hearted challenges were evident all over the pitch as PT threatened to add further goals in a dominant 10 minute period. The Maroons defensive frailties were further exposed when they failed to deal with a long ball up the middle of the pitch, the central defenders again caught square with the PT forward collecting the loose ball and applying a very good finish to extend the lead to 3-0. Final change saw Matty back on for Matthew G.
The Maroons showed more fight in the final 5 minutes but failed to make any offensive impression with PT running out winners 3-0.
Verdict:
Hugely disappointing result against opposition that we have the ability to overcome. Unfortunately at this level of football, if you make basic errors, you tend to get punished, which, today, as in the Aldershot game, is what happened. 3 big problems today, firstly a real noticeable lack of communication on the pitch, secondly we were defensively very poor lacking composure and organisation at the back, thirdly frequently getting caught in possession on the ball in midfield after failing to pass when the opportunity was there.
These are recurring problems and ones that we need to overcome sooner rather than later if we are not to experience a long hard struggle this season.
MOM Matthew Reeves.

Camberley Town Raiders 1 Camberley Boys Maroons 1
Tough game today, this team beat us 6-0 at the end of last season in a totally one-sided game with the lad who plays centre forward (and is in the Portsmouth Academy with Daniel) scoring 5 goals. Because of this we opted to attempt to strengthen the back four today with Christy right back, Steven moving back to partner Josh in the centre and William moving across to left back.
The Camberley game at Frimley Lodge Park was a really good tense enjoyable game, both teams started well, the Raiders strong in midfield and up front but not so good at the back. First 15 minutes was fairly even with both teams well matched and no real chances. Raiders were quite direct but never really breached our back line, when they did with long balls over the top Matthew S in goal was off his line to collect. Maroons then began to play the better football had the better of the half and had two good chances to take the lead with Matthew G and Andrew unable to convert. Nothing much for me to say at half time as they were playing so well and 100% effort from all.
Second half we dominated the first 10 mins, scored a simple goal after 2 mins, williams throw catching out the raiders defence and Matthew Reeves chased the ball through and his determination took advantage of a hesitant keeper and Matthew managed to get to the ball first and roll it into the net. We then had a good chance to add to the lead, Matthew R made a strong run down the left after combining with Daniel but with Matty totally unmarked in the 6 yard box the cross to him was behind the goal. The raiders then hit back and dominated the next 15 minutes, pressure was relentless but some great defending in and around the penalty area meant that they were unable to create a real chance, again Matthew S showed great awareness and handling in goal. The raiders pushed more boys forward at 5 minutes to go the midfield looked really tired against fresh legs a number of scrambles developed with a couple of last ditch tackles saving us, Raiders had 4 and 5 up front at this stage and we found ourselves a little outnumbered, 5 mins left Matthew made a great save but the loose ball was bundled in to put Raiders level at 1-1. A couple of heads went down at this point , however Maroons responded well and a great chance was worked by Daniel who’s cross fell to Matthew W who found himself 8 yards out but just delayed his shot for too long allowing a defender to block.
Game finished 1-1 but we could've been 2 or 3 ahead before Camberley equalised. Enthralling game, the boys were really disapointed not to have won, however they gave their all and looked the better side for much of the game so can't ask for more than that. The week before the raiders played the top side from Div One in the cup and beat them 11-1 so it just goes to show the level of football in which the boys are playing.

Camberley Boys Maroons 1 Aldershot Town Blues 4
Todays opponents at the IV Form were Aldershot Town Blues (ATB). Line up Matthew S in goal, Christy, Josh, William & Matthew G in defence, Kieron, Andrew, Steven & Daniel in midfield, Matty and Matthew R up front with Jack as sub.
The Maroons enjoyed the first success in the third minute when Daniel’s intelligent pass set Matthew R free wide on the right, Matthew advanced down the right flank to the edge of the penalty area but his cross lacked a target in the 6 yard box and the ball ran out for a goal kick.
ATB hit back and in the 5th minute a long ball forward in behind the Maroons defence caused problems, the danger thwarted by a perfectly timed saving - tackle on the edge of the area by Christy.
ATB attacked again winning a corner in the 6th minute. A well flighted corner was met by the head of an ATB player but fortunately his header flew over the bar.
At this stage of the game ATB looked the more effective side, firstly because they played the game to their particular strengths, namely pressuring us whenever we had the ball, contesting every loose ball and looking to hit the ball forward directly to their forwards as soon as they could. By comparison the Maroons seemed a yard slower to the ball, continuously gave the ball away to ATB whenever we had any decent possession with the result that the ball was hit back up front immediately putting us under pressure.
The Maroons were unfortunate to be on the wrong end of a very poor decision after 11 minutes conceding a free kick just outside the penalty area for an unknown offence. An excellent free kick by ATB was looking like a goal until a fine jump and header from Steven cleared the ball off the goal-line to keep the score at 0-0.
The Maroons were having trouble with ATB’s direct style and were still at this stage unable to put any noteable passes together. 16 minutes until the Maroons threatened again, this time Steven’s pass sending Matthew R breaking clear of the ATB defence but the keeper out quickly to save from Matthew. Back came ATB again, a high bouncing ball caused confusion outside the penalty area resulting in a hand-ball by Josh giving ATB a free-kick. Another fine free kick from ATB was struck with pace and power but fortunately cleared the bar by about a foot. We had now had ample warning that several of the ATB boys possessed the ability to strike a shot at goal from well outside the penalty area, given the opportunity.
The pattern of the game continued as the Maroons struggled to make any impression on the game. 23 minutes in and with too much time on the edge of the area an ATB forward cracked a shot goalward which needed a fine save from Matthew S in goal to keep the scores level. Another strange decision after 20 minutes when Steven sustained an injury following a challenge from behind, even though he was ok to continue the ref insisted that he went off the pitch subsequently refusing to let him back on until a further 3 minutes had elapsed.
25 minutes in and an Aldershot corner was cleared outside the area, again no challenge or pressure was forthcoming from the Maroons and the home supporters sighed with relief as another powerful shot just went over the crossbar. The Maroons failed to heed the warning signs and again Aldershot found themselves in an opportune shooting position, unchallenged, Matthew S again saving his team.
Despite having played so poorly it seemed as if the Maroons would get to half time on level terms, however with a minute left on the clock some calamitous defending saw two opportunities to clear the ball when, under no pressure, not taken resulting in a loose pass across our own penalty area being intercepted and slotted into the corner of the net to put ATB 1-0 on the half time whistle.
Half time saw an injured Andrew taking a rest with Jack coming on. Lots to say at half-time and surely the Maroons couldn’t play quite as poorly in the second half.
The signs looked good as the second half began, the Maroons beginning with a more positive and workmanlike approach to the game. 32 minutes saw Matthew R make a great run down the right flank but no Maroons in the right place to take advantage of his cross.
33 minutes and a tigerish tackle from Jack won the ball on the half way line, he played a first time ball down the line finding Kieron in space, Kieron surged forward into the ATB half, he reached the penalty area and sent in a pinpoint cross to the far post which was headed home on the bounce by Matthew R.
A fantastic move which involved moving the ball quickly , first time when the opportunity was there – we hoped that this would be the turning point of the match and the Maroons would now take control.
The Maroons briefly enjoyed a 10 minute spell where they looked a better side, Matthew G put through by Steven’s lob but his shot lacked the power to beat the keeper.
Despite being a lot more competitive they still attempted to dribble the ball rather than pass resulting in them being caught in possession throughout the half, handing the initiative back to ATB with players having made runs and out of position. The defence became more and more disorganised with the two central midfielders needlessly playing in the back four and marking the 2 forwards with 3 defenders standing around marking nobody. Subsequently when the ball got cleared into midfield it was returned unopposed by ATB. It needed somebody in defence to take responsibility and ensure that defenders were marking forwards allowing the midfield boys to play where they were really needed.
44 minutes and a poor Maroons clearance failed to send the ball wide, instead the ball dropped on the edge of the penalty area and with time and space the opposition forward drove the ball into the corner of the net to restore Aldershot’s lead to 2-1. Another change at this point saw Matty taking a rest and Andrew back on. Aldershot extended their lead to 3-1 after the Maroons being caught in possession, the ball played forward and again with the defenders standing off the forward was able to take time and blast the ball powerfully past Matthew for 4-1, a very dissapointing final result.
MOM: Christy (just pipping Matthew S)
Verdict: Unfortunately the negatives today far outweighed the positives. First half we simply gave the ball way too easily all over the pitch. Second half frequently failed to choose the right option of when to pass and when to run with the ball, the only time we chose the right option it resulted in a goal.
Finally the defenders need to take responsibility for marking forwards rather than having midfield players do it. 3 or 4 defenders should be comfortable marking two forwards, many times we had two midfield players marking the 2 forwards and 3 forwards standing idle making nobody. As a result for much of the second half the team were playing with no real shape.

Camberley Boys Maroons 8 Fleet Spurs Utd 1
New season upon us and our first 11-a-side game saw Fleet Spurs United (FSU) visiting the immaculate pitches at the VI Form.
The Maroons began the game strongly with a good interchange of passes between Daniel and Matthew R, Matthew firing in the Maroons first shot on goal but wide of the post. Credit to Fleet who responded and worked hard to match the endeavour of the Maroons team. The two teams were fairly even for the next 9 minutes, neither able to fashion a real goal scoring opportunity with much of the game confined to midfield. Positionally the Maroons were not quite right with the midfield and forwards playing a little too deep and not pushing up far enough which gave the opposition a little too much time and space. Gradually the boys began to find their positional awareness and as a result began to take control of the game. Cam began to enjoy some success offensively, particularly down the right flank including some good support from Christy who registered Cam’s second attempt on goal from long range. A similar move down the left flank saw Kieron and Matthew G combine well resulting in a corner kick. Kearns corner kick caused problems in the defence who failed to clear, Steven reacting well and showed a great technique as he hooked the ball high into the net with the outside of his right foot 1-0 Maroons on 10 minutes.
The goal served as a real injection of confidence as the Maroons really took total control of the game. Some fantastic passing football ensued with everybody looking comfortable on the ball.
16 mins: Some great passing and movement as the ball was worked between Daniel and Andrew, Andrews ball forward was headed on by Matty putting Matthew R through, Matthew showed great strength and determination to hold off a challenge allowing him to advance into the area but firing just wide of the goal.
18 mins: Josh and William combined to break up a FSU attack, William took possession of the ball, looked up and played a superb long pass which found Matthew R just beyond the half way line, Matthew outpaced the chasing defenders advanced into the area and displayed great composure as he sidestepped the advancing goalkeeper before rolling the ball into the net to give Cam a 2-0 lead.
20 mins: Another great run from Daniel who collected the ball in his own half before beating several players as he advanced down the right flank, a great cross across the outside of the penalty box where Steven met the cross with a shot but unfortunately well wide of the target.
22 mins: Passing move between Steven, Andrew and Daniel with Daniels shot on target but saved by the goalkeeper.
23 mins: Again Daniel took possession and another fine run down the right flank, an intelligent cross to the far post found Matthew R who headed the ball back across the goal to the feet of Matty who turned and instantly drove the ball past the keeper inside the far post for a very well taken goal. 3-0
26 mins: Good work on the left flank this time with Matthew G and Kieron combining, Kieron driving on with a good run and delivering a cross which Fleet did well to clear.
Good shot blocking tackles from Kieron and Steven.
Daniel and Andrew swapped passes before a delightful chip from Andrew put Matthew R clear, this time the goalkeeper did well to clear but found himself stranded out side his box, Kieron showed good initiative in trying his luck from distance but the shot was wide of the post.
Half Time. 3-0
Camberley began the second half strongly determined not to let FSU back in the game, another fine sequence of passing between Andrew, Steven and Matthew R set up Matty for another shot on goal which flew just outside the far post.
32 mins: Daniel simply unplayable today another great run down the line with a super cross to the edge of the 6 yard box and Matthew R so close to applying the finishing touch with his head but the ball just evaded him.
33 mins: Switched flanks again this time building down the left, Kieron’s cross superbly held up by Matty who laid the ball back to Steven who’s shot was saved by the keeper.
35 mins: Good passing between Andrew, Steven and Daniel before Stevens pass send Matthew R clear down the right, he reached the goal line before delivering a cross to the edge of the 6 yard line the goalkeeper failed to hold onto the ball and it run loose inside the 6 yard box where a perfectly placed Matty made no mistake firing home and taking the score to 4-0.
38 mins: Same move again this time with Daniel breaking down the right, another inviting cross but no maroons far enough forward this time to take advantage.
Credit to FSU who responded well and enjoyed their best spell of the game as they took advantage of some hesitancy amongst the Maroons and began to win some good challenges. They showed that they could play some good football given time on the ball and after 41 mins a fine through ball caught the Maroons back line a little square, the forward took the ball into the area only to be denied by a super save by Matthew in goal who was alert and saved at the strikers feet to deny Fleet a certain goal.
43 Mins: A break down the Maroons right flank this time, another good run and a goal looked a certainly this time but again Matthew S responded with another great save to deny Fleet again.
With no subs the boys were visibly tiring but showed great determination as they matched Fleets renewed determination and again raised their own game.
44 mins: Daniel again dribbling down the right wing, before looking up and playing a pin point cross to the edge of the 6 yard box where Matty was perfectly positioned to fire the ball home to claim a Matt Trick and extend the boys lead to 5-0.
49 mins: Great display of determination from Matthew R who dispossessed a FSU defender with a fine tackle, he advanced into the area and crossed, Matty meeting the cross but just wide with his attempt on goal.
51 mins: Good spell of possession ended with a shot on by by Daniel which was cleared, Kieron took control of the ball 25 yards from goal, he took the ball on a couple of yards before cracking an unstoppable shot high into the top corner of the net with a fantastic strike to take the score to 6-0.
54 mins: Great exchange of passes between Andrew and Kieron with Kieron making a strong run down the left flank, he delivered a perfect cross finding Matthew R at the far post, Matthews shot beat the keeper but struck the underside of the bar, he managed to get to the rebound but unbelievably the ball again struck the bar, this time bouncing clear of the goal.
55 mins: Stevens corner met by Matthew G firing just wide of the target.
56 mins: Daniels run down the left crossing for Matthew R to stroke the ball home for 7-0.
57 mins: Fine saving tackle from Josh on the edge of the area. FSU keep the pressure on and got a consolation goal following a move down the left, 7-1.
58mins: Great determination by Matthew R who robbed the full- back of the ball out wide before firing in a shot just over the bar.
59mins: Strong challenge from Steven winning the ball 10 yards inside his own half, a great first time ball inside the fullback released Kieron who carried the ball towards the penalty area. A heavy first touch had the crowd holding their breath, however Kieron steadied himself before rifling a shot into the net for an 8-1 lead. Still time forone more run down the right by Daniel beating several players but his final shot just the wrong side of the right hand post.
MOM: Everybody
Verdict : Perfect start to the season with contributions from everybody.
